Kristaps Porzingis became the first Latvian-born player to win an NBA championship, but unfortunately that came at a price.

The Boston Celtics center will have to undergo surgery after winning the Finals 4-1 against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks.

“There was definitely some additional risk, but I didn’t care. I thought, ‘I want to give everything I can and then fix it if I have to. “I think something could have happened, for sure,” Porzingis said after announcing that the recovery will take “a few months.”

The Latvian suffered a medial retinaculum tear that led to a dislocated posterior tibial tendon in the second game of the Finals, an injury the team described as “rare” in its press release.

After missing the games in Dallas, he returned to play 16 minutes in Boston’s decisive 106-88 series victory.
