Kyshawn George Becomes Third Swiss Basketball Player to Reach NBA

Kyshawn George will be the third Swiss basketball player to play in the NBA, the world’s top professional league. The 20-year-old from Valais was drafted in the first round (number 24) by the New York Knicks, who then sent him to the Wizards of Washington. Like Thabo Sefolosha (13th in the 2006 draft) and Clint Capela (25th in 2014), George also trained in France in Chalon-sur-Sâone. The Swiss will join a team in the US capital that is in full reconstruction and has chosen two other players in the first round, including the French talent Alex Sarr, drafted with the number 2 overall.

Son of Deon George, former Monthey legend, Kyshawn George follows in Sefolosha’s footsteps also in the USA. Even Thabo, in fact, had been chosen by New York and was then transferred to Washington in exchange for two picks for the following drafts. Capela, however, was drafted by Philadelphia, who then turned him over to the Chicago Bulls.

George, who also holds Canadian nationality, can play as a 2 or 3. He is coming off a season in the NCAA (college league), where he played for the Miami Hurricanes averaging 7.6 points per game. His qualities also include good defensive skills and an excellent percentage in 3-point shooting, above 40%. The fact that he was chosen in the first round will guarantee the Swiss a four-year contract, of which the first two will be guaranteed at around 2.9 million dollars per season.

The Frenchman Zaccharie Risacher, 19 years old, son of the 2000 Olympic vice champion Stéphane Risacher, was chosen with the overall number 1: he will play for the Atlanta Hawks.
