The recent draw for the League calendar has generated complications for Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Betis due to its coincidence with the start of European competitions. The first weekday matchday of the league, scheduled for August 28, coincides with the return of the Conference League playoff, in which Betis participates.
The second weekday matchday, set for September 25, coincides with the first matchday of the 2024-25 Europa League, affecting both Basque teams. Due to this coincidence, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad will have to postpone their commitments for the seventh day of the league, which are matches against Leganés and Mallorca, respectively, since that same week they will play their first Europa League match.
The usual thing would be for these First Division matches to be played a week before, during the first day of the Champions League, which this year will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
In the case of Betis, if they manage to qualify for the group stage of the Conference League, they will face a similar situation. Their debut in the group stage of the Conference League on September 25 will coincide with the seventh round of the league, in which they must face Las Palmas away from home.
This change in the European calendar is due to the new organization of the competitions. In the new format, with an expanded group stage for the Champions League and Europa League to eight games and the Conference League to six games, it has been decided that the first day of the Champions League will be played only in one week, from Tuesday the 17th to Thursday, September 19. The first day of the Europa League will be played next week, between Wednesday, September 25 and Thursday, September 26.
