Latvian Athletes at a Crossroads: Can They Achieve Olympic Glory in Paris?

Two weeks ago, the European Athletics Championship ended in Rome, where the best achievement of Latvian athletes was two seventh places in the javelin. What do Latvian athletes look like against the background of Europe and the world, and can we silently wait for the sixth Olympic medal in athletics in Paris – a question that should already have a semi-objective answer.

The number of Latvian track and field athletes capable of meeting the Olympic standards has unfortunately shrunk very rapidly in recent years – if 12 years ago in London, 23 athletes wore the red and white colors, then four years later in Rio the number had already dropped to 14, in the next games in Tokyo – to eight, and in Paris threatens to be even smaller. The level of the highest achievements also follows the same path – the medals won were replaced by the fight for them, a place in the top six or ten – a step beyond this threshold. What are the Latvian muscles at the moment to try to break this curve again in the opposite direction in Paris? Here it is good to take a look at the results and rankings, putting them in context.
