Latvian National Team Announces Squad for Baltic Cup, Including Several New Faces

It has already been reported that the head coach of the Latvian national team, Paolo Nicolato, named the list of candidates for the start of the Baltic Cup, including 27 footballers.

“Uldrikis and Emsis cannot help the national team this time due to health problems,” reports LFF.

Vladislavs Gutkovskis and Jānis Ikaunieks are also not on the list of candidates, but “Daugavpils” goalkeeper Dāvids Orols and “Valmieras” midfielder Lūkass Vapne received an invitation to the national team for the first time, and Mārtiņš Ķigurs has returned to the national team after a long injury period.

In the June training camp, the Latvian national team will have six potential debutants.

Latvian football players will compete against Lithuania in the semi-finals of the Baltic Cup on June 8 in Liepāja. Estonia and the Faroe Islands will meet in the second semi-final.

The final match and the match for third place will take place on June 11. If the national team of Latvia meets with Estonia, this match will take place in the opponent’s field, but if the opponent is the Faroe Islands, the match will take place in Latvia.

The Baltic Cup was organized in a similar format last time in November 2022, when the Latvian national team beat Estonia in penalty kicks in the semi-finals, but lost to Iceland in penalty kicks in the final. Latvia is the current holder of the Baltic Cup trophy.

The Baltic Cup is the oldest national football tournament still taking place in the world. The Baltic Cup was played for the first time in 1928.
