Lautaro Martinez Leads Argentina to Victory Over Chile in Copa America Clash, Secures Early Qualification

Lautaro Martinez shines. Argentina beats Chile and guarantees early classification.

One day after turning 37, Lionel Messi returned to the stage of the 2016 Copa América decider and, as fate would have it, against the same opponent: Chile.

But, unlike the final eight years ago, Argentina defeated the Chileans 1-0, scored by Lautaro Martinez, in front of a completely packed MetLife Stadium.

The victory qualified the current Copa América champions, who lead Group A with six points. Chile appears in third, with just one.

The two teams return to the field on Saturday (29). Argentina faces Peru, while Chile will try to qualify against Canada.

The first half was largely dominated by Argentina. Advancing their marking, the Argentines controlled the Chileans, created several chances to score, but failed with the last pass.

The outlook of the match remained the same in the second half. However, Chile had two good chances to open the scoring. Attentive, goalkeeper Dibu Martinez worked well and avoided the Chilean goal.

Close to the final whistle, Lautaro Martinez, who had replaced Julian Alvarez, scored the solitary goal, which ensured Argentina’s early classification for the next phase.

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from Chile, the oldest player to play in the competition (41 years old), ended up having to settle for the man of the match award, finishing the game with 8 saves in the game.
