A dazzling franchise like the Lakers is of course used to playing for the title. Los Angeles has already won the NBA trophy 17 times. But LeBron James’ team has been far from that recently. Two years ago they missed the playoffs, and in the past two seasons they were clearly defeated by Denver twice. In 2023 they lost 0-4 in the conference finals and this season they lost 1-4 in the first round of the playoffs.

Of course, LeBron James and Anthony Davis also imagined it differently. Both led the team to the title in the Corona bubble in 2020, but not much happened after that.

James now apparently wants to do something to make the team more competitive. As several US media outlets reported, the 39-year-old is set to activate the exit clause in his contract until 2025 and be re-signed as a free agent on reduced terms. This would give the club more financial leeway for further trades.

Something is happening with the Lakers

The “King” of course also wants to play with his son and now has that chance in Los Angeles. The Lakers selected Bronny James at 55th overall. The 19-year-old youngster will wear the number 9 on his back and will wear the inscription “James Jr.” If both were to play together, they would be the first father-son duo in NBA history to play on the court.

There is a lot going on at the Lakers at the moment. At the beginning of May, the club parted ways with coach Darvin Ham and at the end of June they introduced JJ Redick as their new head coach. The front office of the 17-time title holders will definitely be challenged this summer and must provide the new coach with a team that can compete for the title.
