LeBron James Declines Player Option, Set to Continue with Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James has been the center of attention in the NBA these past few days. And not because of him directly, but because of the selection of his eldest son Bronny in the draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. A selection, in the 55th position (second round), which would allow for the first time in history that a father and son would play together in the same franchise in the North American League. But, of course, everything was on hold because the Akron forward had to decide whether or not to activate his player option for 51.4 million dollars to continue in purple and gold.

A decision that took shape this Saturday: the four-time NBA MVP has declined to exercise it and will go on the market as a free agent. Although his goodbye will be temporary, it seems, since LeBron intends to continue with the Lakers and enjoy being on the court with his son. Shams Charania (The Athletic) and ESPN assure that he will sign again with the Los Angeles franchise.

LeBron could agree to a three-year, $163 million deal. The Lakers would be willing to do so to close out his career in Los Angeles: the forward is 39 years old and would be 42 for the final year of the contract. That is, an average of $54 million per season, although it would be increasing, would start at a lower figure that would allow the franchise to increase its ability to move in the market to improve the roster. Or, it could even be less money, which would further alleviate the Californian salary mass.

Despite his age and the weight of the seasons behind him (he has been there since 2003, 21 years), James has not dropped in his level of play. He is not the same as when he started, it would be impossible, but he is still one of the greats in the NBA with 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists on average in a campaign in which he has played 71 regular season games. And in which he has become the top scorer in the history of the League after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s impossible 38,387 points. He has accumulated, right now, 40,474 points. The next active player in the historical ranking is Kevin Durant… with 28,924.

Furthermore, under his direction, the Angelenos added one more title to their showcases with the conquest of the In-Season Tournament, the NBA Cup, after defeating Indiana Pacers (123-109) in the final with 23 points from Bron , who won the MVP of this new tournament.
