Until Saturday afternoon, the superstar could have decided to exercise his contractual option for a final season with the Lakers. This would have earned him $51.4 million (€48 million). Instead, negotiations are now underway that could be concluded quickly. In just one week, the USA Olympic team, which includes James, will begin its preparations for the games in Paris.
James is more concerned with improving the squad, his agent told ESPN. Therefore, he would not work towards a possible three-year contract with a maximum salary of 162 million dollars (151 million euros). Klay Thompson, who was already a champion with the Golden State Warriors, is considered a possible candidate for a transfer.
