LeBron James’ Son Bronny Drafted by Lakers, Raptors Pick Mogbo in NBA Draft

DRAFTING RESULTS

It’s a dream that LeBron James first let float a few years ago, the idea of playing in the NBA alongside one of his sons. A further step has now been taken.

Bronny James, the eldest son of the all-time leading scorer, was drafted Thursday by the Los Angeles Lakers, the club his father has played for since 2018. James was selected 55th overall, with only four picks remaining in the second round.

“I am beyond privileged,” he wrote on Instagram.

LeBron James could become a free agent next week. A father-son duo on the court has never become a reality in the NBA, to this point. Around a hundred athletes joined the circuit after their fathers played, always at least five years after the end of their father’s career.

Next season, LeBron James will tie Vince Carter for longest career in the NBA, with a 22nd campaign.

At 19, Bronny James was listed at six-foot-four in the NCAA but six-foot-one and a half at the NBA combine heading into the draft. He played one season with USC, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 25 games.

James missed the start of the season after surgery to correct a congenital heart defect. This was discovered following a cardiac arrest suffered during training during the summer. Last month, a panel of doctors cleared Bronny James to make himself eligible for the NBA draft.

He could make his debut in a Lakers uniform on July 12 in Las Vegas against the Houston Rockets in the Summer League.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and new head coach JJ Redick spoke with him on Thursday, shortly before the selection became official.

“We welcomed him to the Lakers,” Pelinka said. “We communicated to him that, first and foremost, it’s a reflection of his efforts as a player and the character he displays as a young man.”

Raptors draft 6-foot-06 center

Holders of the first pick in the second round of the NBA draft, the Toronto Raptors have selected center Jonathan Mogbo from the San Francisco Dons in the NCAA.

At 6 feet, 06 inches, Mogbo is projected as a future smaller center with good explosion.

After starting his collegiate career with the Missouri State Bears, where he averaged 8.0 points per game in 2022-23, Mogbo decided to continue his career with San Francisco this season.

His numbers have exploded, averaging 14.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game this year with the Dons. Mogbo is 22 years old.

“The entire USF basketball family is so proud of Jonathan,” Dons head coach Chris Gerlufsen said in a press release. His selection is a reflection of the hard work and dedication he has shown with us. We can’t wait to cheer him on to the next level! »

On Wednesday, the Raptors drafted Ja’Kobe Walter from Baylor University with the No. 19 pick.
