Bronny James, eldest son of the best point scorer in history, was drafted Thursday by the Los Angeles Lakers, the club for which his father has played since 2018.
Bronny James was chosen 55th overall, with only four picks remaining in the second round.
“I am beyond privileged,” he wrote on Instagram.
LeBron James could become a free agent next week.
A father-son duo on the court has never become a reality in the NBA, to this point.
Around a hundred athletes joined the circuit after their fathers played, always at least five years after the end of their father’s career.
Next season, LeBron James will tie Vince Carter for longest career in the NBA, with a 22nd campaign.
Bronny James, 19, was listed at 6’4″ in the NCAA but 6’1 1/2″ at the NBA combine heading into the draft.
He played one season with USC, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 25 games.
James missed the start of the season after surgery to correct a congenital heart defect.
This was discovered following a cardiac arrest suffered during training during the summer.
Last month, a panel of doctors cleared Bronny James to be eligible for the NBA draft.
He could make his debut in a Lakers uniform on July 12 in Las Vegas against the Houston Rockets in the Summer League.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and new head coach JJ Redick spoke with him on Thursday, shortly before the selection became official.
“We welcomed him to the Lakers,” Pelinka said. “We communicated to him that, first and foremost, it’s a reflection of his efforts as a player and the character he displays as a young man.”
