Leon didn’t celebrate. He showed what he can do. “Like a champion”

Slovenia is usually a very difficult opponent for Poland. This time in Łódź, on the last day of the 2024 Nations League, this team stood up to ours only in the first set.

The team led by Nikola Grbić confidently and deservedly won the match for the bronze medal. Although not all of our volleyball players played a great or even very good match.

We rate volleyball players on a school scale of 1-6.

Marcin Janusz: 3+

It’s not as accurate as it can be and generally uses few options. He lacks the ball for the second line, has no effective combinations with the midfielders, and loses his opponents’ blocks too rarely. Vigilant on the block, he scored five points with it. In this match he showed again that although he is not the tallest, he is not a hole in the Polish wall. But the elements of the craft that are the basis for a setter must improve before the Olympics.

At 2:0 and 9:9 Grbić took him off the pitch. Because he was increasingly striking with his inaccuracy.

Grzegorz Łomacz: no rating

He played too short, after all. And when he came on, it really depended more on our very good service than on the fact that he somehow calmed down the game.

Bartosz Kurek: 4-

One block, one ace, and 8/19 in attack. Not bad, maybe even good. But this is not yet what the captain can play. And what he will probably play soon.

Łukasz Kaczmarek: no rating

He made double shifts, but it’s unclear why, since he practically didn’t get the ball. He attacked once, but did not score a point. The match report shows that he scored once with a block and once with a serve. It was impossible not to notice this first time, because he celebrated this action, sprinting around the pitch as if it had happened not with a calm lead of 19:13 in the second set, but with a match worth an Olympic medal. You can see how much he wants to go to the Olympics in Paris.

Bartłomiej Bołądź: no rating

He didn’t play. I wonder if that means coach Grbić has already given up on him in terms of the Olympic squad.

Jakub Kochanowski: 4

Two aces, two point blocks, only one point in attack. But he only got one ball there, it’s not his fault that so little. Good performance. And we’re waiting for matches in which he can show more.

Mateusz Bieniek: 3+

In attack 4/10, in block no point, and a big plus for three service aces. But this is still not Bieniek at his best. Yet!

Norbert Huber: no rating

He didn’t play.

Wilfredo Leon: 5

In the first set, he finished four of nine attacks. This was already a performance twice as good as the day before – in the semi-final against France, in two and a half sets, he attacked nine times and scored only two points. But Leon’s 4/9 from the first set is nothing compared to his blocks at 25:24 and 26:24 in this set. And compared to what he showed in the next sets. In the second set, he had a balance of 5/7 in attack and two aces. In the third and last set, he remained the leader of our team (4/6). He finished the match with a record of 13/22 in attack, with three blocks and two aces.

And you know what’s best? That Wilfredo played brilliantly with a face that made it easy to read that he felt sorry for what had escaped on Saturday. It’s nothing, after all, the Nations League is just a preparatory tournament for the Olympics. But Leon always and everywhere wants gold. He felt that he had played poorly in Saturday’s semi-final against France. He rehabilitated himself in an instant. Like a true champion.

The rating would be even higher if he received better.

Tomasz Fornal: 4

He scored five points with a block. He was the best in the team in this element. In attack, this time, he was weaker – 7/18. On the serve, no point. His reception of the serve also left a lot to be desired. But again, applause for his bravery. Even if at one point he overdid it and for some reason found himself on the Slovenian side of the pitch with his chest sticking out towards Klemen Cebulj.

Aleksander Śliwka: no rating

He played too short.

Kamil Semeniuk: no rating

He played too short.

Pawel Zatorski: 2

He received very badly. He looked weak even against the uncertain Leon and Fornal, who also didn’t have the best day in reception. The Slovenians made the most aces on him – two. Invisible in defense, he only hit two balls. Here we have to wait for Olympic form. If we read correctly, coach Nikola Grbic will choose him.

Jakub Popiwczak: no rating

He didn’t play.
