The players of the Dutch national team have told each other the truth after the last group match at the European Championship against Austria (3-2 loss), say Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Aké. “I also take the criticism very seriously. We still have confidence that we can make this European Championship a very special tournament”, said captain Van Dijk at a press conference.
The two defenders showed – five days before the match with Romania in the round of 16 (Tuesday 18:00) – understanding for the storm of criticism that the team has received in recent days. “There had to be a lot better”, says Aké.
Criticism Van Basten
Van Dijk added Studio soccer a lot to endure from Marco van Basten. “He is the captain. He has to lead and organize, but that is not done well enough. He has to do that better.”
Van Dijk says he understands that criticism. “I blame myself for that too. I’m not crazy, because I know when I can and should do better. I’m working on that too.”
The captain of Oranje thinks that the Netherlands needs to get revenge against Romania. “Then we need to show it on the field again. We are confident that we can still make it a special tournament. Let the last match be an eye-opener for that.”
