Former football professionals Per Mertesacker and Christoph Kramer analyze the European Championship matches for ZDF. Moderator Jochen Breyer does not like the term “player material”. He asks the experts to stop using it. The reactions to the scene surprise everyone involved.

Former world champion Per Mertesacker received a reprimand from presenter Jochen Breyer for using the term “player material” during ZDF’s European Championship broadcast. The journalist sparked an online debate about the group stage match between Spain and Italy (1:0) on Thursday evening.

Mertesacker mentioned in his analysis before the match that the Spanish had a different style, “because they no longer have the players to just play for possession.” Breyer then said to Mertesacker and Christoph Kramer, another expert: “Players’ material – because you both use the term a lot. I know that some fans at home will be critical of that, because people are not material. Maybe in future we’ll just say squad or player potential.” The two 2014 world champions looked at each other, smiled and replied: “Okay.”

Viewers discussed on social media whether Breyer’s intervention was justified. Clips were quickly shared, some of which said that the moderator was forbidding his guests from speaking.

“Nobody needs to worry,” says Breyer

Breyer spoke to BILD about the scene. “To be honest, I would never have thought of it like that. It really surprised me,” he said. “Nobody needs to worry that Chris and Per are no longer allowed to use the word. I get a lot of messages during a tournament and have heard from several people that they are critical of the word. I try to incorporate this feedback and just wanted to pass it on.”

Kramer himself said that he did not feel patronized: “I don’t understand the criticism. Per, Jochen and I are really good friends. Jochen’s job as moderator is to give us such advice. It’s all cool.”
