View of the World Cup standings

Before the race in Spain, Max Verstappen leads the world championship with 194 points. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari is in second place, 56 points behind. Lando Norris is in third place with 131 points. Nico Hülkenberg has so far collected six points with the Haas. The Sauber drivers and Logan Sargeant in the Williams are still without a single point.

Hülkenberg from 13th place

In the row behind Pérez is Nico Hülkenberg. The German fought his way into Q2 with the Haas yesterday and is now several places ahead of his teammate Kevin Magnussen, who will start the race in 16th place.

Pérez with grid penalty

Sergio Pérez will start the race with a grid penalty from Canada. The Mexican will be moved three places back on the grid after he returned to the pits with a “significantly damaged car” at the Canadian Grand Prix. Since qualifying did not go as planned anyway, he only managed eleventh place.

Ferrari lurking in third row

Ferrari recovered from a difficult Grand Prix weekend in Canada and took the third row of the grid in Spain with an improved car, although they may be disappointed that they were not able to do better. The fourth row of the grid will be occupied by Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon from the Alpine team, who will now be keen to score more important points for the team.

The field is closing in

The Formula 1 field has come closer together in recent months and it looks like an exciting race in Barcelona. Lando Norris drove to pole position with an incredibly strong lap in his McLaren, and he should now be keen to win. The Brit narrowly beat Max Verstappen. The second row is made up of the resurgent Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
