Everyone on edge for their match of truth
The Czech Republic and Georgia open the fourth match day of the second round of the European Championship in Germany. Both the Czechs and the Georgians lost on the opening match day and hope to be able to collect their first points in the Volkspark Stadium in Hamburg.
The tough Czechs lost 2-1 to Roberto Martinez’s Portugal on Tuesday after a late goal by Francisco Conceiçao. Czech national coach Ivan Hasek promised at the press conference in the run-up to the match that they would attack more than against the Portuguese.
“In the first game we lacked courage, but we were also under constant pressure. We had to defend the entire game and we did that quite well. We gave everything, but they were the better team and we have to accept that.”
In the event of another defeat, the European Championship 2020 quarter-finalist’s tournament could end prematurely.
“We don’t expect Georgia to take the initiative, but they do have three to four players who can attack very well and very quickly.”
The Georgians lost 3-1 to Turkey in their first group match, but according to national coach Willy Sagnol, they have taken a big step forward.
“The 3-1 defeat against Turkey was an emotional match. That may be the reason why we didn’t play well in the first twenty minutes. It will be a good memory anyway, because the players loved it. They can rightly be proud” , Sagnol said.
The Frenchman expects “a different match” against the Czech Republic.
“The Czech Republic has a lot of experience at major tournaments, qualified for the European Championship in a good way and we must respect them. If we play with confidence, we can achieve a fantastic performance.”
