LIVESTREAM: Leading group shrinks in tough and hot first Tour stage, wandering Cavendish abandons

Rit 1 in of Tour

Are the legs oiled? Today the 111th Tour de France starts with a tough hill stage between Firenze and Rimini.

The course builders have drawn up an undulating course of no less than 206 kilometres. The procession starts in Tuscany at 12 o’clock, at 12.40 o’clock we get the official start.

The course is dotted with 7 slopes and invites daredevils. The first polka dot sweater will hang in front of them like a carrot.

The top of the last climb, the Côte de San Marino, is rounded at a little over 25 kilometres from the finish. Then follows a descent towards Rimini.

Will the GC contenders stir immediately or will they save themselves a bit? How much control is there in the peloton? Will strong sprinters like Mads Pedersen survive? And what can we expect from Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel?

We should know the first stage winner and the first yellow jersey wearer around 5:45 PM.
