Los Angeles Lakers Select Forward Dalton Knecht in 2024 NBA Draft: A Closer Look at the Rookie Talent

The Los Angeles Lakers used the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft to recruit forward Dalton Knecht, a graduate of the University of Tennessee. The native of Thornton, Colorado, was the Volunteers’ leading scorer with 21.7 points per game and was a Consensus All-American.

Because of his offensive ability, Knecht can immediately contribute for a playoff team as a bench scorer. His best scoring performance at the college level was 40 points against the Kentucky Wildcats. His three-point accuracy was 39.7%.

One of the problems for Knecht, 23, is that he is not one of the best perimeter defenders. During his only year at Tennessee he averaged less than one steal (0.7) and one block (0.6).

According to information from Spotrac, Knecht will have a four-year, $18.53 million contract. The estimated salary for his first season in the NBA is 3.8 million.

Dalton Knecht’s college journey

Knecht had an uneven journey in college basketball. His first two years were spent with Northeastern (CO) Junior College. For 2021-22, he transferred to Northern Colorado and came to Tennessee for 2023-24. Knecht’s effort was constant and his numbers improved year after year. He went from averaging 8.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in his first season with Northern Colorado to 21.7 points and 4.9 rebounds with the Volunteers.
