Love Denied by Higher Powers: Kerber and Zverev Won’t Compete Together in Paris Olympics

It’s like a love that both want, but a higher power seems to be against it!

Now it’s over! Angelique Kerber (36) and Alexander Zverev (27) will not compete together in the mixed doubles at the Olympics in Paris. The Olympic champion said this before the start of Wimbledon in London.

The Hamburg native: “I won’t be able to get into the tournament with Angie in terms of ranking. I would love to play with her, but mathematically it’s not possible.” There are 16 mixed teams competing in Paris, a maximum of one per country.

Who will be included will be decided by adding up the world rankings as of June 10th. Zverev was fourth, Kerber 31st due to her ranking protected by her maternity leave. But the ranking added to 35 is not enough.

What now? “I only play a second discipline alongside singles. I don’t want to take a place away from any doubles player. If Pütz/Krawietz and Struff/Koepfer come into the field, I’ll play mixed.” Then with Laura Siegemund (36). She said in January that she wanted to play with Zverev in Paris.

Things went quite well at the United Cup in Australia in January. Zverev/Siegemund worked together well and won for Germany. In the first two matches, Kerber was Zverev’s partner, and there was one win and one loss. The next three matches with Zverev and Siegemund were all won.

The possible Olympic constellations: Dominik Koepfer’s (30) ranking could be too bad to compete with Jan-Lennard Struff (34). Then, instead of Koepfer, Zverev would play doubles with Struff and forego the mixed doubles. Siegemund would then play mixed doubles with Tim Pütz (36).

If Koepfer/Struff can compete alongside Krawietz/Pütz as the second German doubles, Zverev would play mixed with Siegemund. A medal would not be unlikely.

But first there is Wimbledon. Kerber and Zverev will not play there until Tuesday. The 2018 winner will have to play against Kazakhstani Julia Putinzeva (29), Zverev against Spaniard Roberto Carballés Baena (31).
