Luka Doncic Set to Play for Slovenia in Olympic Qualification Tournament after NBA Finals

While the NBA Finals were completed at the start of the week, Luka Doncic is trying to take advantage of a few days of rest to recover after a long season and treat his injuries. Because a big deadline awaits him at the beginning of July: the Olympic Qualification Tournament with Slovenia.

Present in Slovenia’s list for the upcoming TQO, Luka Doncic declared during the Finals that he would join the national team “if his body allows it”. We cannot say that the Mavs phenomenon is in perfect health (on the contrary), but it is still difficult to imagine him withdrawing from this summer.

Mavs general manager Nico Harrison expects Doncic to play for Slovenia in early July.

“Playing for the national team is probably one of his greatest pleasures. As long as he can walk, he will play for them. That’s what I think.”

Given the importance that Luka has in Dallas, and the rest he surely needs at the moment, the Mavs could try to convince him to skip the next deadlines with the national team. But Nico Harrison and the franchise appear to be OK with his participation in the TQO, and potentially the Olympics if Slovenia qualifies. It would still be a shame to frustrate Luka, who wants to represent his country’s colors in major international competitions almost every summer. Especially when there is a place in the Olympic Games in the balance.

As a reminder, Slovenia will begin its TQO on July 2 in Greece. On the program: two matches against Croatia and New Zealand, before a potential final against the Greeks of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
