After the Olympic qualifying tournament in Debrecen in May for men and the 2023 African Championship for women, Madagascar will be taking part in an international competition, the eighth edition of “RunBall 2024” this weekend. The tournament brings together twelve men’s and twelve women’s 3×3 basketball teams and will take place in Saint-Denis, Reunion Island, this weekend.
For the first time, Madagascar will be represented by two teams. The male formation is formed by the quartet Elly Randriamampionona, Livio Ratianarivo, Arnol Alpha Solondrainy and Fiary Jonhson Rakotonirina, and the female one by Sydonie Marie Erica Andriamihajanirina, Muriel Harisoa Hajanirina, Christiane Minaoharisoa Jaofera and Rondro Emeranchine Raherimanana.
The interest for the Malagasy men’s team is to have the opportunity to compete against the French 3×3 team, which will participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Livio Ratianarivo, captain of the Ankoay 3×3 national team, explains that “we are awaiting with interest the arrival or not of the French national 3×3 basketball team which will play in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Concerning the other countries, we do not know exactly their level. As competitors, we will try to do our job and go as far as possible while offering the maximum.”
The men’s Ankoay will fight against players from France, South Africa, Botswana, Senegal, Martinique, Guyana, Mayotte, as well as teams trained as Kreopolitans, Étoiles Du Monde (Créoles USA + Kréo), La Réunion 1 and La Réunion 2.
Serious challengers
For the ladies, the band of Sydonie Marie Erica Andriamihajanirina, captain of the Ankoay national team, must face players from South Africa, Botswana, Senegal, Mauritius, Real De Maurice as a guest team Runball, Martinique, Guyana, Mayotte, the Kreopolitan teams (selection), Réunion 1, Réunion 2.
Organized by the Réunion Basketball League, the event will this year attract some major high-level basketball teams such as the French national team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The latter will appear as the VIP team of the competition. It will start as a clear favorite, but the Malagasy players will appear to it as serious challengers who will not give up. The Ankoay men’s team has already beaten the French national team by a score of 21-20, during the World Cup in Austria in 2023.
This meeting in Saint-Denis will be of capital importance because the winning team of this tournament will qualify for the challengers tournament in Pristina, Kosovo.
