Magic Decline Team Option on Moritz Wagner Despite Interest in Re-Signing him

It sounds incongruous, but it is not. The Magic signed Moritz Wagner to a two-year, $16 million contract in the summer of 2023, but the second of those deals depended on a team option. Well, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPNhave now opted not to exercise that team option despite having the goal of reaching a new agreement with the German center in free agency.

The truth is that the German’s performance has been really good since he arrived at the Florida organization halfway through the 2020-21 campaign. Starting almost always from the bench, he has established himself as a regular in the second unit to average 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in just 17.7 minutes per night last season. In addition, he helped open the court with 33 percent on triples.

Although there is no official confirmation – there can’t be – and there will surely be other teams knocking on his door, the aforementioned source emphasizes that the player would also be happy to re-sign with Orlando, a team that took a huge step forward this past season to finish in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 47-35 and enter the playoffs.
