“We know the player. There is nothing more to say at the moment,” Heidel explained on Monday when asked by kicker. The 23-year-old Kaishu Sano has a contract with the current second-placed team in the J-League until January 31, 2025 and would be available for a transfer fee of around one million euros a good six months before the end of his contract. According to Japanese media reports, including the reputable Hochi newsMainz is said to have already made an offer, which 05 boss Heidel would neither confirm nor deny.

In the winter, Werder Bremen were interested in the international player, but were unable to reach an agreement with his club. In Mainz, Sano could fill the gap left by Leandro Barreiro in the number six position, who is moving to Benfica Lisbon on a free transfer after his contract expired. At the start of the summer break, the 05ers announced that they would be looking for a new player for this position because they do not feel that they are sufficiently prepared with Dominik Kohr, Nadiem Amiri and Tom Krauß and also want to have another type of player in the team.

Hope for Gruda and van den Berg to stay

Sports director Heidel is optimistic about Brajan Gruda and Sepp van den Berg staying in Mainz. Exceptional talent Gruda (20) is on the radar of numerous top clubs. “We have no price tag because we don’t want to give the player away. We are not in any negotiations with any club. Brajan Gruda still has a two-year contract, we are very happy that he is with us,” said Heidel in the AZ Mainz.

The loan contract with Liverpool FC regarding van den Berg ends on June 30, 2024. “The only one who has made a decision is Sepp. He definitely wants to stay in Mainz. He has said that very clearly in public,” added the 05 boss. In an interview with the The Telegraph However, around three weeks ago the Dutch central defender had only made it clear that he wanted to stay in the Bundesliga.
