The Mainz Athletics are in the lead in the fight for a playoff spot. The Rheinhessen team won the first game against the bottom team from Hünstetten in the evening. At the end of the game on Mainz’s Hartmühlenweg, the score was 12:3 for the A’s.

They were able to score twice in the first inning. Peter Saldana hit the ball over the fence in left field. One inning later, Niklas Rossius increased the home team’s lead by one run with an RBI double. In the fourth inning, the guests from Hesse were able to celebrate their first run. After a sacrifice hit by Anthony Pomilia, Vicente Velazquez was able to run to the starting base. He had previously stolen second base with great baserunning.

But then Mainz dominated the proceedings again. The decision in favor of the A’s came in the fifth inning. First, Peter Saldana hit the ball out of the ballpark again and put two more runs on the scoreboard before Peter Johannessen increased the lead to five runs with a solo home run. After that, Hünstetten’s Phil Meyer’s working day on the mound was over. The righty allowed five hits, six runs and five walks in five innings on the mound. He had two strikeouts. He also suffered the loss.

Vicente Velazquez took over on the mound for him. But he was caught off guard and conceded a whopping six runs in just one inning. Despite this, the STORM was able to score again. Back to back RBI doubles from Joshua Harrison and Oliver Jochum in the seventh inning also prevented the game from ending prematurely under the 10-run rule.

Tim Stahlmann (1H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 5K) earned the win with a strong performance on the mound.
