Malaysian Coach Admits Indonesia’s Superiority, Wants to Emulate Shin Tae-yong

KOMPAS.com – Malaysian coach, Kim Pan-gon, praised the Indonesian national team and wants to emulate Shin Tae-yong’s method in honing the skills of the Garuda squad.

Malaysia failed to follow in Indonesia’s footsteps to qualify for the third round of 2026 World Cup Qualification in the current format.

Kim Pan-gon’s troops only finished third in Group D standings even though they managed to win 3-1 over Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is the only ASEAN country to qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications in the current format.

Kim Pan-gon also expressed his praise for the Indonesian national team, saying that the team coached by Shin Tae-yong would be the best squad.

“The Indonesian national team will soon become the best team with what they have tried in the past,” said Kim, quoted by Vietnamese media, TheThao247.

Seeing the superiority of the Garuda squad, Kim wanted to play against Indonesia to find out the extent of the Malaysian team’s abilities.

“Malaysia must be their challenger,” said Kim.

Furthermore, Kim explained that he wanted to imitate Shin Tae-yong’s method of hunting for quality pedigreed players to strengthen the Harimau Malaya squad.

“Maybe we can follow the example of Indonesian coaches, they fly to Europe to look for naturalized players,” he said.

However, according to Kim, developing a system to produce superior local players is the most important way.

“However, for me the most important thing is developing a system that can produce the best local players,” he said.

Despite failing to get Malaysia through to the third round, Kim stated that he would continue to lead Harimau Malaya to focus on qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup.
