‘Manchester City unleashes war with legal battle against Premier League’

Manchester City ‘declares war’ on the Premier League. The Times reported this on Tuesday. The national champion is fed up with the financial rules of the English competition and is taking ‘unprecedented legal steps’, according to the English newspaper. The hearing scheduled by the Citizens starts Monday, June 10.
The hearing is expected to last more than a month. At worst, the whole issue has far-reaching consequences for Man City. Huge fines could be handed out to the owners and it is even possible that manager Pep Guardiola’s team will be relegated from the Premier League.
115 charges have been pending against Man City for alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. The charges relate to sponsorship deals financed between 2009 and 2023 by companies with connections in Abu Dhabi. Man City has been denying for some time that this has broken the rules.
The Manchester superpower is now hitting back and wants the so-called APT law to be scrapped in the very short term. This law prevents wealthy owners from investing an infinite amount of money into a club.
The APT law came into effect when Newcastle United fell into the hands of owners from Saudi Arabia in December 2021. This prevents clubs in England from entering into commercial deals with companies that have close links with the relevant owners abroad.
According to The Times, Man City’s attitude is causing annoyance among the other clubs in the Premier League. They fear that if the champion successfully appeals, lucrative sponsorship deals will no longer be viewed objectively. This would allow Man City to collect even more money, and therefore spend even greater amounts on players.
However, Man City does not want to operate alone and invites the other nineteen clubs from the Premier League to participate in the hearing. According to The Times, between ten and twelve clubs have already indicated that they want to participate in the campaign.
The English newspaper emphasizes that this has caused a ‘civil war’ between the various clubs in the Premier League. It is unknown which clubs have joined Man City.
