Marc Marquez Sentenced to Penalty, Blames Contact with Bastianini

Marc Marquez had to be willing to finish tenth after being given a penalty in Dutch MotoGP 2024. Marquez said contact with Enea Bastinini was the cause.

The Gresini rider actually finished fourth in the race at the Assen Circuit on Sunday (30/6). However, Marquez was later found to have violated tire pressure rules and was given a 16-second penalty.

It is known that the eight-time world champion’s motorcycle tire pressure was only 0.01 below the provisions for one lap. According to Marquez, the collision with Bastianini in the last sixth lap also affected it.

The maneuver itself caused Marc Marquez to go wide off the track. The eight-time world champion was then closely followed by Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46), but was able to maintain his position until crossing the finish line.

The penalty is another blow to Marquez at Assen, meaning the 31-year-old only pocketed four additional points after failing to finish in the sprint race.

“Unfortunately, despite being very little behind, we were outside the technical parameters regarding tire pressure, and therefore we accepted the penalty,” said Marquez in Crash.

“It’s a shame that we left with so few points: we could have had two fourth-place finishes, but…

“The contact with Bastianini played a part for sure, but we are not looking for excuses. I managed the tyre pressure well until then. Let’s finish this weekend and then focus on Germany,” said Marc Marquez.
