Marcelo Bielsa suspended for clash against United States

Uruguay’s Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa has been handed a one-match suspension that will see him sidelined for their Copa America Group C clash against the United States.

Uruguay’s Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa was handed a one-match suspension which will deprive him of the bench during the Copa America Group C clash against the United States, the host country, on the night of Monday to Tuesday, organizers announced on Sunday.

Bielsa was punished after his players showed up late for the second half of his team’s 5-0 win over Bolivia on Friday. For the match against the hosts, “El Loco” will be replaced on the bench by his assistant Pablo Quiroga. Bielsa is one of several Copa America coaches to have been punished for delaying the match.

Argentina’s world champion coach Lionel Scaloni, Chile’s Ricardo Gareca and Venezuela’s Fernando Batista have also been targeted by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) for similar offences.

The Uruguayan Federation (AUF) was fined $15,000 (around €14,000). Uruguay is virtually assured of a place in the quarter-finals after beating Panama 3-1 in its first match, before outclassing Bolivia.
