Marciano Vink is deeply impressed by Lamine Yamal’s performance in the group stage of the European Championship. During ESPN’s EK Praat program, the analyst makes it clear that he enjoyed every duel of the sixteen-year-old Spaniard. “I think he is exceptional, of course,” Vink judges.
“The big star at this EC? Yamal, sixteen years old… He is of course exceptional,” says Vink in the talk show. “When you are sixteen, the speed is normally not there yet and physically you can’t keep up either.”
“But what he technically shows is simply not normal. There are quite a few nice wingers around, including Jamal Musiala, but if you can do this at the highest level at the age of sixteen…”
“We also know how much pressure is at the European Championship, because some players also succumb to it. He is sixteen and plays freely. He also shows it every game. In that respect, I think it really is a double line after his name,” says Vink.
Colleague Kees Luijckx is also impressed by the winger of the Spanish national team. “Uninhibited. You almost wonder when he will start to feel pressure.”
“It also seems to me a very strange sensation. That you are sixteen and he plays as if he has never felt pressure. He just plays as if he is with Spain Under 18,” said Luijckx.
Yamal has played in all group matches at the European Championship so far, although he came on as a substitute against Albania. Although the right winger provided a continuous threat in the group stage, he was not yet able to score. He did provide the assist to Dani Carvajal in the won match against Croatia (3-0).
