Marko Arnautovic may have left the Netherlands about fourteen years ago, but he has still not forgotten the Dutch language. On Monday evening after the lost opening match against France (1-0), he appeared in front of the camera at the NOS.

Arnautovic played for one year in the youth academy of FC Twente in 2006/07, before making his debut in professional football with the Tukkers. The temperamental attacker would eventually play two seasons in the Grolsch Veste.

In addition to his 14 goals and 10 assists in 59 matches, Arnautovic also mastered the Dutch language in Enschede. Now, fourteen years later, he still manages to make himself understood.

“You will never forget the language,” says Arnautovic in conversation with Joep Schreuder. “I still speak the language. We have a few Dutch people at the club. If you talk to them, you will not lose the language.”

Arnautovic is officially under contract with Bologna, but has been playing for Internazionale since last summer. There he was a teammate of Davy Klaassen, Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij last season.

The now 35-year-old attacker came in after an hour against France for Michael Gregoritsch. “I train hard every day to stay fit,” said Arnautovic. “I definitely have to do more for my body, I’m also getting a year older.”

Arnautovic hopes to be of value in this tournament for Austria, which plays against Poland on Friday and the Netherlands on Tuesday. “You have to see what your body can handle. I’m glad I’m still here. Hopefully it continues like this.”

The match

Austria managed to bravely defend itself against France. Ralf Rangnick’s team ultimately had to bow due to an own goal by former Ajax player Maximilian Wöber.

“It was not an easy match,” Arnautovic analyzes. “We know France has a good team. They are favorites to win the tournament, but I think we played a good game.”

“We know that we have to rely on our physical strength. We have to put a lot of effort into the match and hope that we can score.”

Finally, Arnautovic addresses Theo Janssen, a former teammate who is in the studio at NOS. “Which of us is crazier? Theo Janssen, of course. Theo is a good boy, we had a great time together.”

“I send my regards to Theo and his family, I hope he and his family are healthy. That is the most important,” Arnautovic concludes.
