Match Fixing Threatens Fair Sport: New Campaign Launched

Match fixing poses a serious threat to a fair and pure sport, closely linked to the (online) gambling market. That is why Centrum Veilige Sport Nederland (CVSN), NOC*NSF, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and more than ten sports associations are now joining forces with the campaign: Match fixing? No chance!

What is Match Fixing?
Match fixing happens when an athlete bets on his own match and then manipulates the result, or when a match is manipulated for sporting success. The most dangerous, however, are the cases where the initiative comes from the illegal gambling world. It often starts with a message via social media, followed by a request to manipulate a competition for an attractive amount. This can have major consequences for the athlete.

Reporting is Crucial
Els van Kernebeek, manager of CVSN, explains: “This campaign is preventive. We inform athletes about what match fixing is, how you can get involved and what risks it entails. It is important that athletes report if they are approached so that we can support them and prevent further problems.”

Strong Together Against Match Fixing
Gijs de Jong, secretary general of the KNVB, emphasizes the importance of the campaign: “Match fixing has no place in football and is unacceptable. Clubs and members are obliged to report it if match fixers approach them. We work closely with the Public Prosecution Service, police, government and internationally with FIFA and UEFA to tackle this threat.”

Rules and Support
NOC*NSF has a blueprint for disciplinary rules to combat match fixing and gambling. Athletes must know these rules to avoid problems. Anyone who is approached must report this to the sports association or CVSN.
