Max Eberl Discusses Expectations for New Bayern Coach Vincent Kompany

Max Eberl spoke about the new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany and admitted that he was not necessarily the first choice – and he also revealed what is now expected of the Belgian in Munich.

FC Bayern Munich’s search for a coach dragged on for months before a solution was presented in Vincent Kompany. The Belgian was given a three-year contract at Säbener Straße until 2027 and has now devoted himself to preparing for the season. “We all at the club agree that Vincent Kompany is the right coach for FC Bayern and are very much looking forward to working with him,” said CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen about the appointment of the 38-year-old.

It is also clear that Kompany was not the ideal solution for the Munich team after Xabi Alonso stayed with champions Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann extended his contract with the DFB team and Ralf Rangnick’s surprising rejection and commitment to Austria – and sporting director Max Eberl has now admitted this. Kompany was “not at the top” of the list, Eberl confirmed at a round of talks with the South German Newspaper on Friday evening and also pointed out that the Belgian’s career so far had not “automatically led him to FC Bayern”.

Rise, fall, exit

After the end of his playing career, Kompany took his first steps as a coach in Belgium at RSC Anderlecht and then in England at FC Burnley. With the Clarets, he dominated promotion to the Premier League thanks to an offensive style of play, but was then shown his limits and was immediately relegated. Kompany himself was spared the trip to the English lower house because FC Bayern signed him.

And for good reason, as Eberl emphasised: The record champions have “found someone who works, who is industrious, who has a vision. He embodies what suits Bayern: success.”
The 50-year-old also revealed that there had been repeated discussions among the decision-makers in Munich regarding possible coaching candidates and that they had always asked themselves whether something was right.

People catcher and not a teacher

Now they have decided on Kompany – and Eberl also explained what they expect from the Belgian. “We don’t want to revolutionize, we want to evolve,” he said, meaning a stronger focus on the club’s own young talent, i.e. the FC Bayern Campus and the talents there. “You also need the coach for that. We want to bring in young people who will be the faces of FC Bayern in the next five or six years.”

In addition to promoting talent, Kompany will also be called upon to act as a motivator. Eberl speculated that after many successful years, the team had “lost a bit of its willingness” within the team. In other words, Kompany should ensure that FC Bayern becomes hungry for success again. In order for this to succeed, Kompany must “be a bit of a people-catcher” and not act like a “top-down teacher”. However, Kompany should not be left alone with this task; rather, Eberl, together with sports director Christoph Freund, wants to take the 38-year-old by the hand as a “companion”.
