Mets beat Rangers for seventh straight win

ARLINGTON — Pete Alonso hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning, and the New York Mets extended their winning streak to seven in a row, rallying to beat the Texas Rangers 7-6 on Tuesday.

Texas had a 6-2 lead after scoring five runs in the fifth inning, its most productive inning in six weeks. But the Mets scored in each of the final five innings.

Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo each hit homers for New York (35-37), which has won 11 of 13 games overall. Venezuelan Francisco Álvarez tied the score 6-6 with a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning.

Closer Kirby Yates (3-1) walked Nimmo with one out in the ninth inning. JD Martínez reached on catcher’s interference call and Alonso doubled into the left field corner to give the Mets a 7-6 lead.

Reed Garrett (7-2), the Mets’ third pitcher, took the win. Puerto Rican Edwin Díaz got his seventh save of the campaign.

For the Mets, Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor was 0-for-5 with one run scored. Dominican Starling Marte was 1-for-5 with one run scored. Venezuelan Álvarez is 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

For the Rangers, the Dominicans Ezequiel Durán 4-2 with two runs scored, Leody Taveras 4-1 with one run scored.
