The Mexican U-23 team turned around a game that was getting out of hand. Only a great reaction could keep them undefeated in the Maurice Revello Tournament, in France, against a combative Saudi Arabia. And he got it. With the help of their best attacking talents, they took a 3-2 victory to reach the last date with the possibility of fighting for the group lead.
The Mexican celebration was not without some signs of concern. Above all, because the comeback revealed their deep problems in managing the scoreboard. Alan Bautista made it 1-0 in the 34th minute and then saw how that advantage passed to the Saudis, who came back with a goal from Talal Haji (43rd) and an own goal from Jesús Alcántar (52nd).
From then on, the efforts of the national coaching staff multiplied. The match required a better version of Bautista and Luca Martínez Dupuy, a forward who plays for the Rosario Central club in Argentina. Fortunately for coach Ricardo Cadena, Dupuy took the ball and capitalized on a penalty in favor of his team to tie the scores 2-2 at 57.
With enough time to move forward, Cadena decided to seek victory with more elements. One of them was Miguel Emilio Rodríguez, who forgot about his defensive tasks and helped the rest of his teammates achieve their goal with 3-2 (70), just when Saudi Arabia was getting ready for the final stretch.
With this result, the Tricolor remained undefeated in the French competition and will reach the last date on Sunday with the possibility of fighting for the group lead against the Ivory Coast, which has only allowed one goal against. A favorable result could mathematically ensure their presence in the next round along with the best classifieds.
In its presentation, Ricardo Cadena’s team tied 2-2 with the host France and defined its first points in the penalty shootout (4-3), with an outstanding afternoon by Edson Ayón and Rodrigo Huecas, authors of the goals in the 90 minutes. In that match, the Mexicans also suffered a comeback after taking the lead, although they avoided being left empty-handed.
After the Ivorians, the fourth and last rival of the first round for the Tricolor will be South Korea, a representative that so far has lost its three previous duels and ranks as the second worst in the entire competition, only behind Indonesia by score difference.
