Mexico’s Archery Team Makes History: The Only Country in America with a Full Squad for Paris 2024

Mexico City.- For more than a decade, Mexico has consolidated its position as a world power in archery, standing out in the most important international tournaments and maintaining a constant presence in the Olympic Games. This year, Mexico is the only country in America that will attend the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a full team.

This will be the third time that the Mexican team has competed with all the places in a summer event, a feat that few nations have achieved. Previously, Mexico competed with a full team at London 2012 and Munich 1972. In London, archers Aída Román, Mariana Avitia, Alejandra Valencia, Juan Serrano, Eduardo Vélez and Luis Álvarez represented the country, with Román and Avitia winning silver and bronze, respectively. . In Munich, the representatives were Aurora Bretón, Francisca De Gutiérrez, Silvia De Tapia, José Almanzor, Rafael Aveleyra and Alfonso Jones.

For the current Olympic cycle, the women’s team secured its three places during the Berlin 2023 World Championship. For its part, the men managed to secure their first quota thanks to Matías Grande at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. This year, the men’s team had three opportunities to secure your ticket to Paris: the Continental Qualifier in Medellín, the World Qualifier in Antalya and via world ranking. It was in Antalya where Grande, Javier Rojas and Bruno Wing were crowned champions, thus earning their way to the Olympic event.

“Bringing a full team to Paris 2024 was a great challenge. Although it was planned, the pandemic affected the training of new youth talent, losing approximately 13 high-level goalkeepers. Fortunately, we were able to keep Javier and Bruno, in addition to integrating Matías,” explained Alejandro Vélez, national coach of the men’s team.

Vélez, who has worked for several years at the National Center for the Development of Sports Talents and High Performance (CNAR), has extensive experience, having directed in two Youth Olympic Games (Nankín 2014 and Buenos Aires 2018) and is currently leading its second cycle in the highest category, after Tokyo 2020, where Luis Álvarez and Alejandra Valencia won bronze in mixed teams.

“With great pride and tranquility I can say that I am 100% of CONADE and CNAR. CONADE has constantly supported me, and CNAR is my home, where I am very happy and supported by the entire team, which is reflected in the results,” Vélez added.

So far, Mexico, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain and France (because it is the host country) are the only countries that have claimed to have a full team in Paris 2024. This feat further highlights the achievement of the Mexican archers: Matías Grande , Javier Rojas, Bruno Wing, Alejandra Valencia, Ana Paula Vázquez and Ángela Ruiz.

With this outstanding participation, Mexico reaffirms its status as a world power in archery, and expectations are set for our archers to continue achieving success in Paris 2024.
