In early May, Ferguson made precisely that point.
“It’s about consistency in my preparation,” he said. “For me, I don’t think I’m even scratching the surface. There’s so many things I want to get better at and I know I can get better. We watch film every day of different games, even the practices we’re doing now, and I’m like, ‘This is it. Well, I can still improve a lot.'”
As things stand, Ferguson has a very real chance to make another jump in 2024, and far enough away to put him in the same conversation as Kelce and George Kittle.
“I need to take exactly the same leap [que el año pasado], but make it even bigger,” Ferguson said. “In this league you can’t get complacent. You have to keep improving and that’s what I intend to do. We have great veterans in our facilities, Brandin [Cooks] and Dak, and they teach you how to take care of your body and mind as you start to age.
“I’m 25 years old and I think, ‘Ooh, I’m getting too old to be a football player.’ I have to start taking those steps and get better every year.”
He is a very self-aware player, humble and eager to discover the few things that went wrong for him in 2023, instead of staring at everything that went right.
Also consider that last season was Ferguson’s first with head coach Mike McCarthy calling the offensive plays, and that begs the question of what he might be capable of now that he feels completely comfortable in the system and now that McCarthy knows exactly what he has in Ferguson.
“It’s his consistency, his passion and his energy,” McCarthy said. “And, really, it’s his growth as a player. We talked a little bit about his weight and I think he’s done an excellent job in his transition phase. He’s having a great offseason.
“He’s very, very comfortable with the things we’re asking him to do outside of his production.”
You watch his plays and one can easily see why the Cowboys expect greatness from Ferguson, having seen him improve in every facet of his game, from production (and everything that comes with it) to his skill and disposition.
He is proving to be the complete package, but the key will be understanding that there is still room for improvement.
But no one can deny his gift.
