Minister of Youth and Sports Reacts to Indonesia Open Results Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics

JAKARTA – Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ari Obedjo opened his voice on the results achieved by the Paris 2024 Olympic athletes at the 2024 Indonesia Open.

The BWF Super 1000 level tournament will start from Tuesday, June 4 to Sunday, June 9, 2024 in Istora Senayan, Jakarta. Six representatives of the badminton sport branch (cabor) who had qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games fell there.

However, none of them successfully reached the top of the tournament.

“We are a little heartbreaking because in the Indonesia Open 2024, none (of Olympic representatives) entered the final. However, I am still optimistic,” said Dito at Wisma Kemenpora, Jakarta, Monday, June 10, 2024, noon WIB.

Of the six representatives of the Olympiads contested, only female Gregoria Mariska Tunjung could travel the furthest. The 2017 junior world champion was able to enter the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, for the remaining five, four of them immediately fell in the first round, another deputy stopped in the second round.

The four representatives expected to fall earlier were the men’s singles duo of Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie as well as the mixed doubles of Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari and the men’s doubles Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

One of the representatives who can advance to the second round is Apriyani Rahayu / Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti.

This result is clearly a step backwards as it approaches the 2024 Paris Olympics. Because, before the Histo tournament, the athletes performed well at the 2024 Thomas & Uber Cup and the All England 2024.

At Thomas & Uber, Indonesia successfully reached the men’s and women’s finals. In All England, there was a clash between Anthony and Jonatan in the men’s final alone.

The Sports Minister said that PBSI, as a parent of badminton, must take measures so that athletes can achieve the target when they appear in Paris later.

“So this is how we maintain the athletes so that in the 2024 Paris Olympics we can have top fitness and quality conditions like in Thomas & Uber and All England 2024,” he said.

Previously, PBSI Head of Development and Achievement Ricky Soebrdja still hoped that badminton could win a medal for Indonesia in Paris later.

At a press conference on Sunday, June 9, 2024, he said that the badminton medal goal would still be there even if the results of the 2024 Indonesia Open were very far from the goal.

Single sons, single daughters and doubles are the most reliable sectors.

“Without excluding the women’s doubles and the mixed doubles, they have a chance. So only one player wants or not to win the best at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” he said.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The sport of badminton begins to compete on July 28, 2024.
