Tucupita Marcano of the San Diego Padres in the North American Major League Baseball (MLB) was banned for life on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Venezuelan had placed a total of 387 illegal bets on games between October 2022 and November 2023. His total stake was $150,000. Among other things, Marcano bet on games of the Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom he played last season.

Marcano is believed to be the first player since 1924 to be banned for life by the league for placing illegal bets. The most famous offender is Pete Rose, who holds the record for most hits in the MLB. After his playing career, he became manager of the Cincinnati Reds, and in 1989 he admitted to having bet on his team’s games during that time. He, too, was banned for life.

Marcano was almost always wrong

Of his 387 bets, Marcano placed 231 on MLB games, including 25 on Pirates games, for which he was not in the squad due to an injury. Marcano doesn’t seem to have much of a clue, however: he only made a profit on 4.3 percent of his bets, according to the league’s findings.

Michael Kelley, a pitcher for the Oakland A’s, was also banned for illegal betting – but only for one year because the bets were made during his time as a player for minor league teams.
