Montreal’s Virginie Chénier Faces Tough Competition at Archery World Cup in Turkey

MONTREAL, Quebec – Facing a strong opponent in Alejandra Valencia, Virginie Chénier was stopped in the first elimination round of the Archery World Cup presented in Antalya, Turkey.

The Quebecer concluded the individual recurve bow event in 33rd place, having placed 43rd in the qualifications earlier this week.

“The qualification went well! There are a few arrows that I would like to take up again. The wind presented quite a challenge, but overall, I was happy with the result,” underlined Virginie Chénier, who should be selected for the Paris Olympic Games soon.

Recently, the cut-off was established at the 64 best athletes in order to reach the first elimination round, rather than 104. A 43rd place like that obtained by Chénier in Turkey thus leads to a tougher first confrontation than in the past.

The Laval resident had a meeting with Mexican Alejandra Valencia, bronze medalist at the World Cup in Yecheon, South Korea, last month. Valencia, fifth in the World Cup standings, ultimately won 6-0.

“I had confidence, but unfortunately the arrows were not good enough. I fell behind from the start and I didn’t manage to come back, shared Virginie Chénier. I would have liked to move on to the next round and have the opportunity to prove myself a little, but we’ll save that for Paris! »

Chénier also participated in the mixed team event with Eric Peters. The Canadian duo lost 5-3 in the first elimination round to Britons Bryony Pitman and Alex Wise, leaving them 17th.

Still on the recurve bow, Peters also took part in the men’s team competition with Brandon Xuereb and Devaang Gupta. They defeated the representatives of Mongolia 5-4 in the first round. The task looked more difficult for the Canadians in the next round, who were up against the best team in the world, that of South Korea, who won 6-0.

The South Koreans will face the French on Sunday in the grand final, while the Canadian archers finished ninth.

On Wednesday, Brandon Xuereb took 69th place in the individual qualifications, which excluded him from the elimination picture.
