National School Games Celebrates 60th Edition with Change of Venue for Opening Ceremony

Havana, June 28 (ACN) New details of the 60th edition of the National School Games (JEN), including the change of venue for the inauguration next Monday, July 1, were offered today at the Ciudad Deportiva coliseum, of this capital.

Agustín Abril, director of sports organization and programming of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), explained to the press today that the official opening of that event will be at the aforementioned coliseum starting at 6:30 p.m. .

He added that the event was originally to be held at the Mártires de Barbados School of Sports Initiation (EIDE) in Havana, but a number of factors made the change necessary.

The director said that the closure will continue on July 15 at the EIDE Capitán Orestes Acosta, in the province of Santiago de Cuba.

Regarding the competitive action, Yadira Rodríguez, technical head of school sports in Cuba, pointed out that 33 school disciplines will be called up, 12 youth and one pioneer.

He added that boxing activities began this Thursday in the province of Guantanamo, and tennis here in the capital; while fencing started today in Havana, weightlifting in Mayabeque and men’s handball in Santiago, he added.

Rodríguez said that 6,594 athletes and 9,401 participants in general are involved in the JEN.

In the case of Ramón Ají, head of school sports on the island, he stated that in athletics, judo, table tennis, badminton and swimming there will also be competitions for athletes with disabilities.

He highlighted that this important competition of future Cuban champions will have a mascot for the first time in its 60 years of existence, named Catín.

April reiterated the importance of celebrating those 60 JEN, even in the midst of a complex context in which the country has so many limitations, which has been an additional challenge, but it was always decided to do them for the pleasure of those young athletes who prepare with a lot of effort. effort with the objective of competing and representing their provinces in this sporting event, he concluded.
