“For me he is still the best goalkeeper in the world”

Germany struggled to win against Greece in the last test before the European Championship. There are still a few things to work on before the European Championship starts, says Jimmy Hartwig. The former international player does not want to get into a discussion about the goalkeeper.

Julian Nagelsmann has dropped Alexander Nübel from his European Championship squad. Now the national coach is taking a special measure. He is bringing a young goalkeeper from the second division into his squad for the tournament in Germany.

Julian Nagelsmann has brought another goalkeeper into his squad for the preparation for the European Championship. The national football coach decided to include Jan Reichert from 1. FC Nuremberg for the selection’s training in the coming days and possibly weeks. WELT learned this. The 22-year-old is now the fourth goalkeeper in the national team’s training.

After the difficult 2:1 victory in the last European Championship test against Greece in Mönchengladbach last Friday evening, the national team has this weekend off. These are the last days off for the 26 nominated players before the tournament (June 14 to July 14). On Monday morning, the professionals will meet again in the German European Championship headquarters in Herzogenaurach. Reichert will also be there then. There will be a public session in Herzogenaurach on Monday afternoon.

Reichert has only played one game in the second division, on the last matchday of last season in a 1:4 loss against Hamburger SV. He is considered a young goalkeeper with potential and has a good chance of becoming the number one in Nuremberg for the new season.

In the German team, he is expected to help maintain the quality of training. It is important to Nagelsmann to train with four goalkeepers. This also includes training games and the possibility of relieving regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The national coach has recently emphasized this repeatedly.

Alexander Nübel didn’t want to be a training keeper

Last Friday, however, he dropped a goalkeeper, Alexander Nübel, from his provisional European Championship squad. This came as a surprise: in mid-May, the coach had decided that he would have four goalkeepers in his squad for the European Championship. But Nagelsmann now wanted to have free places for field players. While field players cannot be nominated later in the tournament, goalkeepers can be replaced during the European Championship in the event of injury.

Shortly before he was dropped from the squad, Nagelsmann had offered Nübel the opportunity to stay with the team as a kind of “training goalkeeper”. However, this option was out of the question for the 27-year-old from VfB Stuttgart.

That’s why Nagelsmann and his coaching team have now brought in Reichert. The young keeper has a short journey and can always help out. There are a few training sessions in Herzogenaurach next week, and on Friday (9 p.m., ZDF and MagentaTV) Germany will open the European Championship in Munich with a match against Scotland.

Despite his recent mistakes, Neuer from FC Bayern remains the number one goalkeeper in the German team, with Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona and Oliver Baumann from TSG Hoffenheim as other goalkeepers.
