“Alexander Nübel is a topic again”

Julian Nagelsmann and the DFB have announced the final European Championship squad. One player still has to be dropped before the tournament. According to WELT information, the national coach made a surprising decision that he had previously ruled out.

The European Championship dress rehearsal against Greece will take place this evening (8.45 p.m. / RTL) at Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach. After that, national coach Julian Nagelsmann will have to drop two players. The final 26-man squad must be reported to UEFA by midnight. There are currently 28 players in the DFB squad.

It is clear that Rocco Reitz (Mönchengladbach) definitely has to go, he was only invited for training. But who else will be affected?

According to WELT information, the goalkeeper Alexander Nübel from VfB Stuttgart will be affected. On Friday morning, the DFB sent UEFA the jersey numbers for the Greece test. There are only three goalkeepers left on the list: regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (jersey number 1), Marc-André ter Stegen (number 22) and Oliver Baumann (number 12). Nübel is missing. On Monday, he sat on the bench in the 0-0 draw against Ukraine with the number 15.

Nagelsmann’s plea for four goalkeepers

Nübel’s departure is a big surprise and is like a step backwards for the national coach. Until recently, Nagelsmann had repeatedly stressed that he wanted to have four goalkeepers. He said: “We have nominated four goalkeepers and will also go to the European Championships with four goalkeepers. There will be no more one-on-one battles. Nübel deserves the nomination because Bernd Leno, who would actually have been nominated, is injured.”

Now the momentum has apparently turned in the direction of an outfield player. However, the game against Greece, in which injuries could occur, remains to be seen. Other candidates for elimination alongside Nübel were defender Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt) and the offensive players Maximilian Beier (TSG Hoffenheim) and Nübel’s club colleague Chris Führich.

Nübel apparently already suspected something, telling “t-online” before Nagelsmann’s decision: “It could still happen. To be honest, I just don’t know. Maybe Julian is now telling himself shortly before the start that three goalkeepers are enough for him because he wants to have more flexibility on the field.”
