NBA Strikes Historic $76 Billion TV Rights Deal with ESPN, NBC and Amazon

The NBA is close to completing an agreement worth 76 billion dollars (70 billion euros) over 11 years as part of the renegotiation of its TV rights in the United States. ESPN, NBC and Amazon would become the new broadcasters.

This is enough to make Ligue 1 salivate, still stuck in the negotiation of TV rights for the period 2024-2029. According to the very serious Wall Street Journal, the NBA is about to recover a whopping $76 billion (70 billion euros) for the broadcast of its matches in the United States over the period 2025-2036, i.e. 6, 9 billion dollars (6.35 billion euros) per season.

For the NBA, this represents a real jackpot and an impressive increase compared to the previous contract ($24 billion over the last 11 seasons). The broadcast of the matches will be divided between ESPN, NBC and Amazon. TNT is therefore exiting the game, while NBC is making a comeback.

The arrival of Amazon could be a game-changer in terms of international rights

For Amazon, this is a great first. The arrival of the platform, available in the four corners of the world, could be a game-changer in terms of international rights. According to L’Equipe, the NBA would have imposed, in contracts signed internationally, the ability to terminate said contract at the start of the next American deal in the event that a global player offers to recover everything. In France, where BeIN Sports remains the broadcaster until the fall of 2024 (the broadcaster for the period after is not yet known), the rights holder could thus be dispossessed of them at any time if the NBA decides to favor Amazon.

Another consequence of this $76 billion deal: the increase in salary caps imposed on the 30 NBA franchises. Star salaries could therefore continue to explode and reach up to $80 million per season by 2030, according to ESPN.
