Negotiating with Falcao: Behind the Scenes of Millonarios’ Newest Signing

In the microphones of 6AM Hoy por Hoy on Caracol Radio, the largest shareholder of Millonarios, Gustavo Serpa, told details of how the negotiation took place with Radamel Falcao García, who was made official as the club’s new player. He revealed that security was one of the aspects that most worried the forward, however, the same footballer did not want, for example, that he only played in Bogotá to avoid traveling and made himself feel like one of the team.

Serpa confessed that the signing was almost lost, since that specific issue of security was what worried his advisors and Falcao himself: “He resolved his family issue that was delicate for him, any change that one decides to make with the family , requires reflection and agreements, I suppose and know that it was the topic that had the most reflection on it. As far as we were concerned, the issue was almost lost, because there was a security issue that worried Falcao’s advisors, him and his family, which had already happened in some circumstances, but that was an issue that At some point, it clouded the intention and fortunately it was resolved,” he commented.

However, the collaboration of the National Police, under the command of director William Salamanca, was key in this aspect. “I spoke with General Salamanca and I knew that Falcao had that concern, I told him to calm down, I felt that he was not able to communicate what he was trying to communicate and General Salamanca is a Millonarios fan and I told him, ‘General, hail you the country because I need Falcao to have certainty.’ He told me that he was available, I told him that I was going to meet with Falcao and that I could call him when I was with him and that gave him peace of mind.”

The anecdote he had with Falcao

Gustavo Serpa said that in one of the meetings, Falcao’s advisors raised the possibility of El Tigre playing only in Bogotá, to avoid travel for security reasons. However, the player himself interrupted and refused this possibility, ensuring that he would be one of the squad and that his goal was to be champion.

“Falcao is a winner, he is an athlete of very high competence who when he takes on a challenge, he does it to win. I’m going to tell you an anecdote that was how much I felt he could pass (the signing). I was on a call with Falcao’s advisors and someone mentioned: ‘Could it be that we don’t make Falcao only play in Bogotá to avoid traveling’ and Falcao interrupted and said ‘I have a commitment to my country, but I also come to be champion, and I come to play and participate with my team, I come to be a member of my team and participate just like the other players,’” he commented. And he added: “He interrupted the person who was speaking ‘make no mistake, I’m going to be champion, I have a prestige to defend.’ If I do this, it is to be champions.’”

Meanwhile, regarding the physical condition in which Falcao arrives, and the willingness to be able to play, he stated: “Falcao comes to compete, we, from the first game, our goal is to be champions. Falcao when he goes to compete, he is another member of the team, if he is fit, he will play. He is going to be one of the squad, he said it himself and he wants to be champion. If the coach has it, Falcao will be in Medellín. We are going to fight for the title and we are going with everything.”
