Netherlands – Austria: the improbable Dutch csc which offers provisional first place in the group to the Austrians

One again. For the seventh time in this Euro 2024, a team benefited from an own goal. This time, it is Austria which is the lucky one. After losing in their first match against France because of the same “csc”, the Austrians had the pleasant surprise of seeing the Dutchman Donyell Malen push the ball into the back of his own net.

We had only been playing for seven minutes when the Borussia Dortmund player completely missed. Returning from his right flank to help his defense, the Dutchman tackled to counter a low cross and deflected the ball into Bart Verbruggen’s net. However, a deserved goal for the Austrians who had had their foot on the ball since the kick-off.

This own goal is the seventh since the start of Euro 2024, while the group stage is not yet over. We are slowly getting closer to the record, which dates back to 2021 with 11 own goals. Antonio Rüdiger (Germany), Robin Hranac (Czech Republic), Klaus Gjasula (Albania), Riccardo Calafiori (Italy), Samet Akaydin (Turkey) and Maximilain Wöber were the first unfortunates before Donyell Malen.

The goal provisionally gives Austria the lead in Group D ahead of France, held in check by Poland, and the Netherlands. These two matches can be followed live with commentary on the leparisien.fr website.
