The novice Julian Schuster follows in the huge footsteps of Christian Streich. Former president Fritz Keller and long-time striker Nils Petersen explain the big changes at SC Freiburg in an interview with kicker.

On a Tuesday in June, Fritz Keller, Nils Petersen and two kicker reporters have arranged to meet in Oberbergen am Kaiserstuhl. The reason for the conversation is the major turning point at the sports club, triggered by the departure of Christian Streich. As luck would have it, the said Tuesday, June 11, is also Streich’s birthday.

The 59-year-old would have received congratulations and kind words from his long-time companions on this day anyway. “In my opinion, the timing of his departure is well chosen. For him and the SC. Maybe he even resisted it, but he probably felt it instinctively. We know him really well. He sleeps five hours and has only the SC on his mind for the other 19,” Petersen stresses with a laugh. Between 2015 and 2023, the striker scored 105 goals for the sports club – under coach Streich and until 2018 also alongside captain Julian Schuster.

Keller, once the driving force

Keller, who runs a renowned winery and two restaurants and a hotel at the meeting point with his family, knows the SC better than very few do. He has been on the board of SC Freiburg since the early 1990s, serving as president for the last five years until 2019. He was the driving force behind Streich’s promotion to head coach in the winter of 2011/12.

Why was Streich the perfect man for him? “Because he knew the club and our DNA as a real training club very well. Training young players, bringing in other talents and developing them further, plus a few stable professionals to have a framework. That’s why we brought him in as a liaison assistant coach under Robin Dutt,” the former DFB President (2019 – 2021) looks back.

Schuster on Streich’s trail – since 2018

It is certainly no coincidence that Schuster also did exactly this job as a liaison coach – since the end of his career in 2018 until now. The fact that he was entrusted with the position in the Bundesliga without any experience as a head coach of a team surprised many.

“Me too,” admits Petersen and explains why: “I knew that he would theoretically be available with his pro license. But I suspected that he would first want to gain experience as a head coach. It is all the more remarkable that he is taking on this challenge. I admire Julian for having the courage after having held back in recent years.”

Read the kicker interview on Monday (or in the eMagazine from Sunday evening), with which bluff Keller once made Streich attractive for the head coach position, why Petersen does not want to be in Schuster’s shoes and how the two view the dark side of Freiburg’s success.
