New Team Sports Hall in Riga to Provide Modern Infrastructure for Local and International Competitions

The new hall will be part of the “Daugavas” stadium complex, managed by the Latvian National Sports Center. The hall will provide modern and high-quality infrastructure for team sports training and local and international competitions. The environment in the hall is intended to be maximally inclusive for both para-athletes and visitors with mobility and vision impairments.

The team sports hall on Krišjāņa Barona street, next to the “Daugava” sports hall, is being built as a six-story building. On the first floor, there is a sports hall with the possibility of providing up to three courts meeting the requirements of international sports federations for basketball, volleyball, handball, floorball and indoor football. A gym, changing rooms for athletes, coaches and judges, storage rooms for organizers and sports equipment, as well as administrative rooms and a cafe are also planned. A service hotel for approximately 50 guests is planned to be placed on two floors.

Daniēls Nātriņš, chairman of the board of “Latvijas National Sports Center” SIA, said in an interview with Latvijas Radio that the cost of the hall reaches 20.8 million euros. The building has many complex structural and facade elements, and additional requirements are also determined by the location of the building in the historical center of Riga, said Nātriņš.

Currently, the only sports hall adapted for basketball in Riga is the “Daugavas” sports hall built in the sixties of the last century, said Kaspars Tsipruss, general secretary of the Latvian Basketball Association (LBS), in a conversation with Latvian Radio. He hopes that structures similar to the team sports hall for the development of youth basketball will be built elsewhere in Riga, and Tsipruss would very much like the LBS office to move to the new building as well.

The new hall will have stationary tribunes, and for a larger audience capacity, they can be supplemented with transformable tribunes, providing a total of at least 2,300 seats. For professional sports clubs, the new building will be suitable to attract a larger number of spectators to the games than in the Olympic Sports Center, which accommodates about a thousand fans, at the same time not claiming the highest level that “Arena Riga” can provide.
