New Tennis Era Begins at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum with the ‘Hamburg Open’ Tournament!

It is set to be the beginning of a new tennis era at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum. The DTB awarded the license for the traditional tournament to the Spanish agency “Tennium” until 2028. The first serve for the “Hamburg Open” (July 13th – 21st) will take place in 25 days.

“We are all very excited and looking forward to the tournament,” says boss Kristoff Puelinckx (54/Belgium). But a look at the field of participants in the ATP 500 tournament (2,047,730 euros in prize money) is initially sobering.

The star of the Olympic dress rehearsal one week before the start of the games in Paris is defending champion Alexander Zverev (27). And Puelinckx also stresses: “The face of the tournament is Sascha Zverev. He is currently the hottest player on the tour.”

Following behind the number four in the world in a broad field are the Dane Holger Rune (21/No. 15), the Argentinians Sebastian Baez (23/No. 19) and Francisco Cerundolo (25/No. 26) as well as the 2022 Hamburg winner Lorenzo Musetti (22/No. 30) from Italy. Dominik Koepfer (30) receives the first (of four) wildcards for the main field from the DTB.

Bitter for Hamburg: At the clay court tournament taking place at the same time in Bastad/Sweden, the stars Rafael Nadal (38), Jannik Sinner (22/No. 2), Andrey Rublev (26/No. 6) and Casper Ruud (25/No. 8) will be playing. Stefanos Tsitsipas (25/Greece), Alex de Minaur (25/Australia) and even the Germans Jan-Lennard Struff (34) and Yannick Hanfmann (32) have chosen Gstaad/Switzerland. And this despite the fact that the tournaments are in the lower 250 category…

The new Rothenbaum tournament director Enric Molina Mur (50/Spain) nevertheless emphasizes: “We have a great mix of players.”

In contrast to her predecessor Sandra Reichel (52), Puelinckx is again setting up a large VIP tent and has created a new fan zone. In return, ticket prices have increased, especially at the top. A premium seat at the final now costs 260 instead of 145 euros.

Nevertheless, the fans’ enthusiasm for tennis remains undiminished. There are only a few tickets left for the final weekend. And Puelinckx promises perfect organization. Because he knows: “We will be judged by the quality of the event and the organization.”
