New VfL Bochum Coach Zeidler Faces Challenge After Losing Ten Players

VfL Bochum loses ten players

Sporting director Marc Lettau described Zeidler as an “outstanding person and incredible communicator” who fit the requirements profile and the “VfL DNA” that those in charge invoked at every opportunity during the presentation. And he also has Bundesliga experience.

From 2008 to 2011, Zeidler was Ralf Rangnick’s assistant coach at TSG Hoffenheim. After five other stints – including at RB Salzburg and its partner club FC Liefering – Zeidler landed at FC St. Gallen in 2018. With the Espen, he became runner-up in 2019/20 and attracted interest from the Bundesliga. “There were always inquiries,” confirmed Zeidler, who relied on an offensive style of play in Switzerland.

Is this also his approach in the Ruhr area? “The style of football comes from the team spirit,” said the coach. It is the “wrong moment to make big statements” about the game philosophy.

The club said goodbye to ten players on Friday, including playmaker Kevin Stöger, who, according to Lettau, still has “some residual hope” of staying.

For almost relegated Bochum, it is now a matter of putting together a competitive team that will then take to the pitch at Zeidler’s favorite time: Even from abroad, he always watched the Bundesliga on Saturdays “at 3.30 p.m.” whenever possible. This means he won’t have to stay up any longer next season – at least on Saturdays.
