New York Mets Pitcher Edwin Diaz Suspended for 10 Games for Sticky Substance Use

New York Mets late-game specialist Edwin Diaz was suspended for 10 games by Major League Baseball on Monday after using a sticky substance in his team’s 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Diaz became the eighth pitcher suspended after using a substance that improves ball grip and spin rate since the major leagues began penalizing the tactic in 2021. Three of them have been from the Mets, including Max Scherzer and Drew Smith last year.

Houston Astros gunner Ronel Blanco was also punished for this reason on May 15.

Diaz’s suspension begins Tuesday in the series opener against the New York Yankees.

The Mets have won 10 of their last 13 games and are 13-6 in June.
